Great Science Webquest

Hello Everyone!

I wanted to share this great Science Webquest titled: "A City in Space." It's geared toward 9th-12th.
The webquest is by Gail Lake. http://projects.edtech.sandi.net/mission/iss/t-index.htm

This webquest highlights the exploration and construction technology used for the International Space Station, while incorporating the communication technology of the Internet and computer applications. It was designed for a high school Technology Core class. (Technology Core classes are based on the idea of self-paced, self-directed learning modules where the teacher acts as a facililtator for student learning.) Each Technology Core module is completed in 10 hours (approximately two weeks).
This webquest could also be used in a middle school and could possibly have applications for both science and social studies.

Tell me what you think!

  1. Lisa I check out the web sight. I can see where it could be used in both science and social studies. Students like to do web quests even though they are still learning the material.

  2. Lisa-since I teach marketing and careers are on students minds, I found a webquest for career. log on to http://education.nmsu.edu/webquests/wq/work.html. The title is WORK doesn't have to be a FOUR-LETTER word: a guided path to Career Planning. The grade level would be great for secondary school. It gives the students quite a bit of information to consider when choosing a career.

  3. This is great Brenda! I also found another one that will be helpful for your students: http://www.trumbull.k12.oh.us/teachers/resources/webquests/career%20webquest/CareerWebquest.htm
On this journey the students will discover information about a variety of careers that will match their interests and their own personal abilities.

Under "Credits" you'll see a list of standards.

    Great job Brenda!

  4. Lisa since you work with technology, have you ever heard of the testing called "cooter" I think that is how it's spelled. My guidance office mentioned it the other day and commented that they were going to start testing students. It's a questionnaire and depending on your answers it gives you careers and colleges. I'll try to get more info on it, but one teacher took the three tests and it came up with cosmetology. Guess what-she is our cosmology teacher and she loves it. Im wondering what my profile would be if I took it. I do know there are three 20min questionnaires. I'll check with guidance and keep you posted.Brenda

  5. Lisa - the spelling is Kuder.
This semester I teach Sports & Entertainment and Travel & Tourism. For the sports class I have the students build stadiums, any sport, out of Popsicle sticks and other craft things., They have to research how a team is built so we spend time in the computer lab. They create a logo for their team and design it. Their football players are made out of wire. I work with the art class for that. We watch the Superbowl and decide what commercials we think will be most effective. after we study the commercials we create our own web-cast. It's like our own 1/2 hr news show with sports and weather. I have the students video themselves and we get quite a few laughs going over the video when it's done. They research franchises and endorsements and come up with their own royalties. They then do a power point presentation on their project.Students love doing it and I involve quite few different types of technology. don't know if you could change it to use in one of your classes. 6. In my other class of Travel and Tourism, I try to involve other curriculum. My students are preparing to complete a DECA (my club)dessert book that they will be publishing and selling to help our DECA club be able to go to conferences. The students work together gathering the different recipes. Then the math classes help them figure out nutritional information. With the help of our web design class they add pictures to the book. Finally the accounting class helps price the books and figure ut how many we have to sell to hit our profit number. Also the typing class types and sets up our pages for the book. I try to get the students to do family recipes and not just copy from a cookbook. Their final project involves a simple cookie recipe that they add different ingredients to to create a new cookie. On Fridays we have food day where we test some of the recipes. This way they can take pictures and download them into our book. This is the first time I'm teaching this so can you think of anything I might have left out? Thanks for your input. Brenda
